Surgical Services

Healing Paws Veterinary Clinic of Ankeny strives to take the very best care of each and every pet we see. Leaving your pet for surgery, whether routine or advanced, can be worrisome and stressful for both you and your furry friend. That is why you can count on Dr. Rauser and his staff to provide comforting, compassionate, quality care throughout your pet’s stay.

Spays

An ovarohysterectomy is performed to prevent unwanted pregnancies in our female pets. As well as reduce the chance of mammary and ovarian cancer. A spay is ideally performed when a pet is between 5-7 months of age but can be performed in older pets as well. Your pet should be able to go home the same day. Please follow the feline at home care instructions or the canine at home care instructions.

Neuters

A castration is performed to prevent unwanted pregnancies in our pets. As well as reduce risk of testicular cancer. A neuter is ideally performed when a pet is between 5-7 months of age but can be performed in older pets as well. Your pet should be able to go home the same day. Please follow the feline at home care instructions or the canine at home care instructions.

Soft Tissue

Masses should be checked and evaluated for removal. If they change rapidly or have certain characteristics under the microscope they should be removed. A pathologist at a outside reference laboratory can help determine if the mass is cancerous and if the tumor was completely removed. There are many other soft tissue surgeries that Dr. Rauser has performed they include: subtotal colectomy, enterotomy, gastrotomy, splenectomy, cystotomy, chelioplasty, episioplasty, and many other procedures.

Emergency

Sometimes life saving surgeries need to be performed on an emergency basis.  Time is often crucial when these procedures are performed. We will do our best to perform theses life saving procedures. Gastric Dilitation Volvulous (GDV) or twisted stomach can occur and if not corrected quickly will be fatal. Signs of a GDV include rapid abdominal distension, vomiting, recumbency, lethargy, and pale gums. Trauma is also a common emergency. Hit by car is the number one reason dogs come in for trauma related injuries. Surgery and supportive care are often times required.
